Stephen Dennis, CPA, Retired

Of Counsel

Stephen Dennis

As a Valuation/Litigation Support Specialist, Steve specializes in determining the value of businesses and advising clients on contract disputes and other civil actions.

When the office isn’t open and the ground isn’t covered with snow, you’ll likely find Steve perfecting his golf game on a local course. But for Steve, a round of golf isn’t simply a game; it’s an opportunity to achieve a longtime goal: sinking a hole-in-one on a tee shot.

Not surprisingly, Steve has applied this same approach—perhaps best described as a relentless quest for excellence—to his decades-long CPA practice.

Steve joined AEM in 2014 with the merger of Baune Dosen & Co LLP. In addition to providing accounting and tax services, his role as a Business Partner and Valuation/Litigation Support Specialist involves determining the value of closely held businesses and professional practices as well as providing financial analysis and testimony in court. His expertise is also critical in helping clients determine lost profits and damages in contract disputes and other civil actions.

Known for his meticulous understanding of tax law, Steve is regularly invited by professional organizations to speak on topics related to business valuation, taxation, and the financial aspects of divorce. He has been recognized in the Directory of Experts, published by Best Lawyers in America, and has been named a Super CPA in every listing published by both Minnesota Law & Politics and Twin Cities Business Monthly.

In 2013, the MNCPA presented Steve with the 2012-2013 Commitment to MNCPA Education Award. Previously, he received the MNCPA Outstanding Committee Award in recognition of his work on the organization’s Tax Committee.

Helping others within the community achieve excellence has long been a cornerstone of Steve’s career. He is a member of several industry-focused task forces, including the MNCPA Business Valuation Conference, Minnesota Continuing Legal Education’s Family Law Institute, and the creation of the Hennepin County Financial Early Neutral Evaluation Program, for which he received commendation from the county’s board of commissioners.

On top of his duties as a partner of a thriving CPA firm, Steve served for nearly 20 years as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School and as an adjunct professor in the Masters in Business Taxation Program at the University’s Carlson School of Management.

In addition to playing golf, Steve is a supporter of the sport. A USGA Patron of Golf, Steve marshaled at the 2009 PGA tournament at Hazeltine and at the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
